Music and influence

Cavalli was a virtually all influential composer within the rising genre of public opera in mid-17th century Venice. Unlike Monteverdi's early operas, scored for the extravagant court orchestra, Cavalli's operas make use of a small orchestra of strings and basso continuo to meet the limitations of public opera houses.

Cavalli introduced melodious arias into his music & popular types into his libretti. His operas own all the characteristic exaggerations & absurdities of the 17th century, but it develop besides the remarkably heavy feel of striking outcome also as the dandy musical facility, & a grotesque humour which was characteristic of Italian grand opera down to the demise of Alessandro Scarlatti. Cavalli's operas provide a just case of a continuous musical development of one composer inside one genre from either the early to the late 17th century within Venice — exclusively two or three operas by others (e.g. Monteverdi & Antonio Cesti) survive. the development is particularly interesting to scholars because opera was however quite fresh medium once Cavalli began working, & experienced matured into a popular public spectacle per prevent of his career.

Cavalli wrote 33 operas, Twenty-seven of which are then however extant, existence preserved in the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana (Library of St Mark) at Venice. Copies of a few of the operas too survive around more locations. Additionally, Nine more operas develop been attributed to him, though a music is misplaced & attribution impossible to prove.

Additionally to operas, Cavalli wrote settings of the Magnificat in the grand Venetian polychoral style, settings of the Marian antiphons, additional sacred music around the more conservative early 17th-century style, & a few implemental music.
